Student discount made it worth it

As a student, I was looking for an affordable gym option. I got the student membership for Active Leeds, and the discount made a huge difference. I used the gym inductions and then started attending some of the fitness classes, which are all included. Without the student rate, it might have been a bit much for my budget, but with it, I feel like I'm getting great value for my money. I've used the gym at two different locations and both were fine. Definitely worth it if you can get a concession.

Good facilities, slow booking

I signed up for the adult gym and swim membership last month. The facilities at my local centre are quite good, well-maintained equipment and the pool is clean. I've been enjoying the public swimming sessions. However, booking fitness classes online through their system can be a bit clunky and slow; it took a few tries to confirm my first yoga class. Overall, it's decent value for what you get, but the website could use some streamlining for class reservations.

Loved the swimming lessons!

I just finished a block of swimming lessons and had such a positive experience! The instructor was fantastic, really patient and encouraging. I felt so much more confident in the water after just a few weeks. The pool was always clean and well-managed too. I'm definitely going to sign up for another set of lessons and maybe try some aqua aerobics next. Highly recommend Active Leeds for anyone wanting to improve their swimming!

i'm moving to Leeds next month and trying to figure out which gym to join. Is Active Leeds better than PureGym or JD Gyms? mainly for classes and swimming.

J Jeff J. 1 month ago
Active Leeds is good for swimming because they have loads of pools. PureGym doesn't usually have pools. Classes wise, Active Leeds has a huge range too, but sometimes the booking system can be a bit slow.

Depends what you want. Active Leeds has more facilities overall like squash courts and stuff, plus all the pools. PureGym/JD are usually just gym equipment and some classes. If you want swimming and lots of variety, Active Leeds probably wins out. Membership covers all their sites too, which is handy.

Hey, does anyone know if Active Leeds does anything for NHS staff? My wife works at LGI and is looking for a new gym.

L Leah Hall 3 weeks ago
pretty sure they have an NHS discount, like a corporate rate or something similar. She'd probably need her staff ID.

Yep, they do! My mate got one. Best bet is to call them or pop into a centre with her NHS card. It falls under their corporate membership usually.

Thinking of signing up for Active Leeds, but wondering about the student discount. Is it a good deal and how do you even get it applied?

J Jacob Sanchez 4 days ago
Yeah, the student discount is pretty decent, saves you a fair bit. You usually have to show your student ID at one of the centres when you sign up, that's how I did it anyway.

It's not like a coupon code you put in online or anything. They'll ask for proof of your student status, like your uni card, at the reception to set up the discounted rate. I think it's like 20-40% off, depends on the membership.

Does anyone know if they have any 'no joining fee' offers coming up? January just passed so I missed that one probably.

M Mark Lopez 2 weeks ago
They often do 'no joining fee' promotions, especially around spring or summer. Keep an eye out around April or June, those are usually peak times for them.

Yeah, they usually have them. I'd check their website around key times like after New Year, but also September for students, and sometimes in June before summer holidays. It's not a constant thing but pops up a few times a year.

How do you book classes? Is it all online or do you have to call up?

D Danielle L. 5 days ago
You can book online or use their app. It's pretty straightforward, just need your membership details.

Most people just use the app or their website. You can see the schedules and book slots for classes or even swimming. I think you can still call but the online way is definitely easier.
